What is a Lumpsum Investment?

A lumpsum investment means putting a single, one-time amount into an investment such as a mutual fund, fixed deposit or bond, and letting it grow over time. You might use it when you receive a bonus, an inheritance, maturity proceeds or sale money. The returns are compounded, so you earn interest on your interest.

This lumpsum calculator shows how much a one-time investment can grow to at the annual return you expect, year by year.

Lumpsum Formula

Future value = P × (1 + r)n
P = amount invested  ·  r = annual return (decimal)  ·  n = years

The rule of 72

Divide 72 by the annual return to estimate the years needed to double your money. At 12%, money doubles in about 6 years; at 8%, in 9 years. The table confirms it: ₹1 lakh at 12% becomes ₹3.1 lakh in 10 years.

Lumpsum vs SIP

With a lumpsum, the whole amount starts compounding on day one. With a SIP, you invest gradually and reduce the risk of investing everything at a market high. If you have a large amount, you can also invest it through a STP (Systematic Transfer Plan) over a few months. Try the SIP calculator to compare the same money invested monthly.

What Return Should You Expect?

  • Fixed deposits and small savings: about 6% to 8%, guaranteed. See the FD calculator.
  • Debt mutual funds: about 6% to 8%, with some risk.
  • Equity mutual funds: have delivered about 10% to 14% over very long periods, but can fall sharply in the short term and are not guaranteed.

Use a conservative rate for planning, and remember that taxes and fund expenses reduce what you finally keep.

Common Lumpsum Investing Mistakes

  • Investing the entire amount in equity just before a major event or at a market high without a plan. Consider an STP over 6 to 12 months.
  • Using an unrealistic return rate in the calculator.
  • Forgetting taxes and exit loads when you redeem.
  • Putting money you may need within 3 years into equity funds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get quick answers regarding calculations, formulas, and tax rules.

Is lumpsum or SIP better for beginners?

SIP is generally recommended for beginners as it eliminates the need to time the market and provides rupee cost averaging.

What is a lumpsum investment?

A lumpsum investment means investing a single, one-time amount, for example ₹5 lakh in a mutual fund or a fixed deposit, instead of investing small amounts every month as in a SIP.

What is the formula for lumpsum returns?

Future value = P × (1 + r)^n, where P is the amount invested, r is the annual rate of return and n is the number of years. This calculator uses yearly compounding.

Is lumpsum better than SIP?

Neither is always better. A lumpsum puts the whole amount to work from day one, while a SIP spreads your entry over time. The right choice depends on how much you have, your time horizon and your risk comfort.

What return should I assume for a lumpsum investment?

Use a conservative number. Fixed deposits and debt funds usually give about 6% to 8%. Equity funds have given higher returns over long periods, but they are market-linked and not guaranteed.

Is the lumpsum return taxable?

Yes. Mutual fund gains attract capital gains tax, and FD interest is taxed as per your slab. The rate depends on the type of investment and how long you hold it.

Note: Mutual fund and market-linked returns are not guaranteed. This is a projection at the rate you enter, not a promise. Read scheme documents before investing. See our disclaimer.
